Silver nitrate (also known as "Hellstone") forms colorless, transparent crystals, which are non-hygroscopic.
The production and use goes back to the 13th century, where you used nitric acid to separate gold from silver.
It shows good solubility in water (but dissolves poorly in ethanol) and can be, depending on the purity, sensitive to light.
In addition to numerous test reactions in laboratory analysis, there are typical uses of silver nitrate as in the galvanic plating, in medicine as an antiseptic or biotechnology as an additive. A popular example is the blackening of the skin at correspondingly marked bills.
