Description

Traditionally, iron nitrate has been used for tanning leather, but also for pickling cotton, as well as for dyeing silk.

Today it is more applications in the field of:

  • Treatment / coating of (metallic) surfaces
  • Preparation of catalysts
  • Water treatment (corrosion inhibitors, for example, to reduce the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in certain wastewater pipes)
  • Waste water treatment (e.g., pH regulation, flocculants, precipitants, neutralization)
  • Intermediates (e.g., preparation of Fe2O3 color pigments)

Iron nitrate is rather violet as a crystalline product. It is soluble in water, alcohol and acetone. The melting point is 47°C. The crystals are therefore often a little deliquescent.
